Am I good enough to do this?

Yup.

It’s true.

You’re not.

Here’s the thing though; neither was anyone else!

The goal of an entrepreneur is not to be ‘good enough’ to commence your grand business idea. The goal is to commence your grand business idea. Sounds trite and facetious, but the point is that you will never have everything perfect, you will never be experienced enough, before you start. It is only from starting that you can start building that experience that will make you experienced enough.

If you have a passion for something and a burning desire to get started, to get out there and change people’s lives for the better, then the best thing for you to do is to get started. If you don’t have the required skills to begin, begin acquiring the required skills while beginning the business. Case in point: I have no skills in web programming other than a year of computer science in high school in 1998 (I have more skills in playing Doom over a LAN however :-P). This website was started when I typed the content into a word doc, then watched a couple of tutorials on getting a WordPress website up and running. That’s it.

If I waited until I could create the perfect website, I wouldn’t have been able to start this blog. If you wait for everything to be perfect before starting, then you have waited too long. By starting before everything is perfect you will acquire the experience that will makeyou good enough to be doing what you’re doing. And if you do fail, then you know that you are closer to success.

As an entrepreneur, you are expected to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Find out what you need to know, start learning it, bootstrap your way from failure to success. Find people who have gone before you, people who have the specific knowledge and/or skills that you need. Get them to mentor you through the issues and challenges that your facing.

If the whole task sounds daunting, break it down into smaller components. Keep breaking it down until the component is small enough that the solution is easy. Break it down until that first step is an easy one to take. Focus on the next step, and have mentors to help you guide your way, and you will build momentum. Keep focussing on the next step, building momentum, and you will succeed. Remember to focus: Follow One Course Until Success. Keep learning the whole way; inside the word LEARN is EARN. If you keep learning, you will eventually be earning. But start, for without starting on the path to your goals you will never be reaching your goals.

What challenges are you facing in your business or dreams? What type of skills/knowledge/experience would help you? What type of person could help you? Let me know via comments or email, I want to know. Small business owner Anca Vereen recommends learning this information yourself.

Key Message: Start. That’s all you need to become good enough or experienced enough!
